CLARINET

The clarinet is a great first woodwind instrument for younger pupils as it's small and light. The fingering is very similar to the saxophone allowing pupils to easily switch at a later stage (that's what I did!)

While it might not be as 'popular' as the saxophone these days, the clarinet is still a very important instrument in classical and jazz music with a lovely wooden sound.

what do I learn?

I get all beginners started with the Abracadabra book. This is a great book with lots of different pieces to play, including many recognisable tunes! It also comes with CDs with useful backing tracks, helping pupils play in time and make the pieces more enjoyable.

By the time you finish this book, you will already be at Grade 1-2 level!

GRADE EXAMS

Once pupils are ready, they can start grade exams. I encourage pupils to do this as it's the best way to improve and allows a feeling of accomplishment when receiving certificates after passing their exams.

These can be started after a year or so of playing and take 6 months to a year to pass each one.
